Rainforest destruction is the global priority

Every second that passes marks the loss of 1.5 acres of rainforest. About 100 acres a minute are lost forever.

Rainforests absorb CO₂ (which is a poisonous gas) and convert it to pure oxygen. Every fifth breath of air that you breathe came from a rainforest. CO₂ is not only poisonous to humans, but it is also the primary culpret behind the greenhouse theory.

70% of the plants identified by the U.S. National Cancer Institute as useful in the treatment of cancer are found only in rainforests.

More than half of all rainforests have been cleared and are gone.

The problem is not cars and SUVs…it's rainforest destruction.

The clearing and burning of rainforests emits more CO₂ than all cars, trucks, and SUVs combined. This is why Brazil and Indonesia release more CO₂ than every other country besides the US and China.

Yes, driving less and consuming less energy is a good thing. But the easiest and cheapest way of reducing CO₂ emissions is to protect endangered rainforests. That's why ShopHandmade decided to not only talk about the environment, but is making a difference.

Protecting rainforests is easy...and cheap!

The fact is that protecting rainforests is both easy and inexpensive. But most people don't know what to do. Here is what we do:

Every time an item is sold on ShopHandmade we protect 25 square feet of rainforest. This means that we purchase enough rainforest protection to stop the release of 90 pounds of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

On average, this is enough to offset the CO₂ related to the energy consumption associated with producing all of the items sold via our web site.

It's the equivalent of offsetting any of these:

• Driving 100 miles in your car
• The electricity consumed by a typical home in two days.
• Shipping a 3 pound parcel 1,000 miles eight separate times.
