Buying Guilt Free - Knowing something is being done

Every item on ShopHandmade is carbon mitigated. We protect 25 square feet of endangered rainforest every time an item is sold. You don't pay a penny for this. Sellers don't pay a penny for this. We pay for it.

Is 25 square feet a lot?

25 square feet of rainforest more than enough to equal the CO2 from the raw materials, shipping those materials to a crafter's studio, the crafting process, and then shipping the handmade item to you.

Understanding CO2 mitigation
Understanding CO2 can be confusing.

Going even further...

Some ShopHandmade stores have taken an extra step and have chosen to protect 100 or even 250 square feet when you purchase an item. Look for the special icons next to their products.

100 square feet is equivalent to the carbon emissions of
the electrical consumption of the typical home in a week.

250 square feet is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of
driving your car for an entire month.

Selling on ShopHandmade the Green Way

Making "Green" on ShopHandmade can be done in a "Green" way...

Everything you sell on ShopHandmade is automatically green. We protect 25 square feet of endangered rainforest with every item. That's enough to sequester the CO2 emissions from the raw materials you used, your own crafting process, and of shipping the materials to you and to your customer. And its free to you…even of free/sponsored listings.

You can take a step further: you can increase the protection to 100 or even 250 square feet of rainforest. It's your choice. We make it easy and inexpensive.

When you choose to participate we'll draw further attention to your item by adding an environmental sponsorship tile to the product detail page.

The facts behind the facts
More CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere by the clearing and burning of rainforests than by all cars, busses, and industry combined. (Source: Conservation International.) The best and fastest way to protect the environment of CO2 is through endangered rainforest preservation. Environmental calculations are always complicated and sometimes controversial. We use the best available science in our calculations and analogies. Note that we typically refer to sequestered CO2, which is CO2 that plants naturally absorb and trap. We draw analogy between sequestering CO2 that would be released by clearing and burning to the releasing of CO2 through the burning of fuels such as by driving your car. In this way, protecting a rainforest which is endangered can somewhat be thought of as mitigating the burning of fossil fuels. Whether or not you are a proponent of the "Greenhouse" theory, we can probably agree that protecting rainforests is good for the environment.
